When you think of Italian renaissance, how many female names come to mind? They may have been half of the population, but very few women have made it into history. In this sumptuously illustrated lecture, Sarah Dunant shares her own journey through art and scholarship, to bring to life women living during this most extraordinary period of history. And along the way celebrates some figures who deserve a bigger place in our imaginations and our history books.
Sarah’s novels include the acclaimed trilogy "The Birth of Venus”, “In the Company of the Courtesan” and “Sacred Hearts” (all three books about the lives of women), her two novels about the Borgia family, “Blood and Beauty” and “In the name of the family.” Her most recent - as yet unpublished - book is about Isabella d’Este, the first female art collector of the renaissance.
Sarah studied history at Newnham College, Cambridge from where she went on to become a writer, broadcaster, teacher and critic. She has written twelve novels, four of which have been short listed for awards, and edited two books of essays. She worked for many years for the BBC in radio and television including presenting BBC 2 TV’s arts programme, The Late Show and Radio 3’s Nightwaves. and most recently a monthly history show for Radio 4 “When Greeks flew Kites” available on podcast via BBC Sounds and I player.
She has taught renaissance studies at Washington University, St Louis, and creative writing at University of Oxford Brookes where she was awarded an honorary doctorate for her services to higher education and literature.
Her most recent novels, set within the Italian renaissance weave cutting edge historical scholarship into fast moving popular fiction, have become international best sellers, translated into thirty languages.
