The Expressionists and music of the Second Viennese School
There are so many parallels between music and art in the 20th century (impressionism, expressionism, pointillism, primitivism, to name but a few) and there is a common shared vocabulary (texture, rhythm, tone, harmony). This introductory talk by Steven Robinson will explore the relationship between the expressionist painters (e.g. Munch and Nolde) and musicians, with particular reference to the the second string quartet of Schoenberg, who was himself a painter.
Steven is a freelance music lecturer. Following the completion of a Ph.D on the symphonies of Beethoven’s pupil, Ferdinand Ries, he taught for 10 years at The University of Liverpool and also gave lectures at Manchester University and the RNCM.
