Wallpaper Exhibition from the Whitworth Collection
A tour with Curator Amy George
Interior styles come in cycles and wallpaper is no exception. Mid-20th century ‘retro’ patterns are currently being reprinted, reworked and recycled in cafés, pubs and homes across the country. This exhibition will showcase the Whitworth’s vast collection of wallpapers from the 1950s-‘60s to explore the designs that are so popular today.
At the heart of the show are a number of Palladio wallpaper rolls recently acquired by the Whitworth that will fill the gallery with their large-scale repeats. Made shortly after the development of screen-printing, which allowed manufacturers to make bigger and bolder designs, these papers were made for modern buildings in a period when many architects were not interested in traditional wallpapers.
Including designs by Roger Nicholson, Audrey Levy and Lucienne Day. The wallpapers display will take you through abstraction, pop, op, scientific discovery and psychedelia.
