St Ives "Middle Generation" Exhibition Abbot Hall
Thursday 02 July 2015
Abbot Hall’s main summer exhibition will look in depth at five key artists – Terry Frost, Patrick Heron, Roger Hilton, Peter Lanyon and Bryan Wynter - who were active in St Ives in the 1950s, showing how their art developed from constructivism to abstraction. The exhibition of St Ives’ “Middle Generation” includes several works acquired in the very early days of Abbot Hall’s own collection, as well as important loans from public and private collections.
We will drive to Farfield Mill, Sedbergh for lunch (soup, sandwiches & cake). The Mill is a restored Victorian woollen mill now a leading venue for textile arts in the North West. There will be time to visit the artists’ studios including the studio of Anne Mackinnon a Manchester Art Graduate & Friend of the Whitworth.
On the way back we will visit Leighton Hall in Carnforth. The Hall’s earliest records go back to 1246. Since then there have been 26 owners of the property and only twice has the ownership passed by sale. In 1805 Alexander Worswick a banker in Lancaster married Alice Gillow. Their son Thomas failed in business after the Napoleonic Wars, but this was the start of the 200 year association of Leighton Hall with the famous Gillow family.
