Thursday 25 September 2014
Dutch painter Piet Mondrian was one of the most important contributors to the development of abstract art at the beginning of the 20th century. This brand new exhibition, which commemorates the 70th anniversary of the artist's death explores the relationship between Mondrian's artworks and the space around them. Focusing on this connection between painting and architecture after Mondrian’s move to Paris in 1911, a major exhibition highlight is a life size reconstruction of his Paris Studio. There will be time to buy lunch in the Albert Dock area.
We will drive to Port Sunlight in the afternoon, stopping first at Christ Church. This beautiful church that opened in June 1904 was the gift to the village by the founder of Port Sunlight William Hesketh Lever, later the 1st Viscount Leverhulme.
We will then visit the Lady Lever Art Gallery to see Rossetti's Obsession: Images of Jane Morris which explores the role of Jane Morris as Dante Gabriel Rossetti's chief muse and the embodiment of Pre-Raphaelite beauty. This exhibition brings together rarely displayed works, focusing on Rossetti's fixation with Morris and his depiction of her as the ultimate femme-fatale. More than 30 paintings, drawings and photographs of Morris, including a number which were used as studies for some of Rossetti's most famous works, feature in the exhibition.
