The Friends of the Whitworth have had a busy year. As well as a wonderful study tour to Germany, we have enjoyed many trips closer to home, including a very successful visit to Hull, our City of Culture for 2017, and Wentworth Woodhouse. Our Sunday concerts go from strength to strength and we have begun a new series of practical workshops as part of our programme. Look out for more of both of these in the coming months! Working with Nirvana Romell, we have organised a very popular lecture series, an inquiry into the origins of modernism, and Nirvana will be continuing to work with us in 2018. Not least, our Thursday evening Look Club has given us an opportunity to get together and share our thoughts about works on display in the Gallery in an informal setting-often followed by a visit to our lovely Cafe. Of course we were sad to say goodbye to Maria Balshaw, who has been such an inspirational Director, both of the Whitworth and the Manchester Art Gallery. We look forward, however, to welcoming Alistair Hudson, from the Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art, as the new Director in February 2018. Looking forward to then, our focus will continue to be the raising of funds to support the Whitworth and ensuring that all of us, as members of the Friends of the Whitwoth, have lots of opportunities to share our enthusiasm for this fabulous Gallery. In the meantime, we wish you all a very happy Christmas and send every good wish for 2018.
