We are delighted to let you know that Nirvana Romell will be giving three talks via Zoom about Caravaggio's time in Rome. The talks will be in October and November of this year and in January of 2027 and a synopsis of each lecture is given below.

TUESDAY, 6 OCTOBER 2026, 18h (UK time)

ROME IN THE LATE 16TH CENTURY

In the late 16th century, both Rome and the Catholic Church were rising, once again, from the chaos caused by the Italian Wars, Reformation and catastrophic floods. Art and architecture were flourishing, with the wealthy patrons from the Papal court using soft power to assert their, and Rome’s, importance. The talk sets the scene for the arrival of penniless and talented young Caravaggio to the Eternal City in 1592.

CARAVAGGIO IN ROME

Caravaggio's artistic development in Rome was pivotal for the evolution of Baroque painting in general. Following the Counter-Reformation’s guidelines, his innovative use of chiaroscuro and dramatic realism transformed religious art, making sacred subjects relatable and emotionally impactful – yet he still managed to cause a stir and scandal among the contemporary audiences. The lecture examines Caravaggio’s masterpieces from the Roman period and their crucial importance in the history of European art.

LATE CARAVAGGIO AND HIS LEGACY

Caravaggio's late period comprises only four years, from 1606 until his death in 1610, which he spent as a fugitive in Naples, Sicily and Malta. Grappling with the consequences of his violent lifestyle, he produced some of his most renowned works, with new themes and urgency that reflected his tumultuous existence. The talk focuses on the highs and lows of his late period, which solidified his reputation as a revolutionary artist, and explores his lasting legacy that still resonates through art history.
