New Members’ Afternoon
New Members’ Afternoon
Thursday 23 October 2025
We are delighted that we have had a good uptake from the new members for this event. We now have 5 places available for anyone else who is interested in coming on Thursday 23rd October at 2pm.
The programme includes :
• Conservation Studio with Daniel Hogger Conservator, Paper
This session will focus on the techniques that Dan uses to conserve, and prepare for exhibition, the gallery’s internationally significant collection of works on paper. Dan is currently working on artworks from the collection that will be shown in next year’s Japanese Prints exhibition and will be able to demonstrate the techniques that he is using on these precious works.
• Where and How the Collections are Stored - Sarah Potter Conservator, Preventive and Sculpture
Sarah will provide a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the Whitworth's main collections storage areas in the basement of the gallery, including a sneak peek at some of the gallery’s most iconic works. The gallery stores almost 60,000 items including textiles, wallpapers, sculpture and works on paper. Sarah will also talk about the wider work of Collections Care and Conservation Team and the challenges that they face to keep the collection safe, including environmental and pest issues.
• A Guided Tour - Dominic Bilton, Project Producer, Project sSpace
Dominic will give a guided tour of artist Yuki Kihara’s Darwin in Paradise Campexhibition which will open in early October. Kihara’s visually compelling projects centre and empower the Fa’afafine and Fa’atama in Sāmoa. The exhibition also focuses on two celebrated Western figures – French modernist artist Paul Gauguin and evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) – who each shaped Western understandings of the Pacific.
Everyone will have the opportunity to visit the three different sessions. This will be followed by afternoon tea with some of the Friends and some gallery staff from 3.30-4.00pm.
