Summer of Love
Thursday 14 July 2022
We begin our fascinating day visiting the Sheila Hicks exhibition at The Hepworth with an hour guided tour. This major collection explores the many facets of Hick’s ground-breaking work from intimate small woven drawings to large-scale installations that fill gallery spaces with vibrant colour. It provides insight into her extensive travels where she observed and collaborated with local artists. Hick’s will respond to the spaces outside of the gallery with a major new commission. There will be time to explore the Hepworth Garden.
Afterwards, we will travel the short distance to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park for lunch and see the dynamic selection of Robert Indiana’s sculpture, painting and prints spanning over his 60 year career.
The exhibition traces the development of Indiana’s sculpture across significant social and political change, six of which will be shown in the landscape. As we enter YSP, we will see his iconic LOVE (red blue green) (1966-98). His work will be seen against the background of parkland, lakes and woodland valley.
Why not celebrate the Summer of Love and bring a picnic to enjoy in the wonderful park grounds!
Taking inspiration from this exhibition, there will be opportunities to investigate the complexities of love and community and how we can represent love in a way that is inclusive and compassionate in the Summer of Love
There have been excellent reviews of both exhibitions. Links: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2022/apr/05/textile-artist-sheila-hicks-colour-blood-vivid-life
