Thursday 27 January 2022
January 27th is Holocaust Memorial Day.
To mark the occasion, we are organising a Friends of the Whitworth afternoon visit to Manchester’s beautiful Jewish Museum and the newly renovated Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue on Cheetham Hill.
There has been a Jewish community in Manchester since the 18th century, but it grew dramatically from the middle of the 19th century, as “Cottonopolis” attracted merchants and textile workers from across the world.
Arriving at Manchester Victoria, the new arrivals made their way up Cheetham Hill, some of them carrying the tools of their trades. Settling at various points along the way, they established their communities. This journey has been followed by other groups of immigrants down the years, but the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, opened in 1874, remains. It, and the museum alongside it, houses a wonderful collection of objects which bring to life the journeys, communities, and identities of their original owners as well as exploring what it means to be Jewish in Manchester today.
Join us on 27th January at 1.30 at Manchester’s Victoria Station and walk with us **, following in these footsteps. We will visit the museum and spend a while in the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue alongside it. There will be time for a visit to the Museum Cafe as well.
Covid restrictions mean number are limited so please book soon to avoid disappointment. The cost is £6 and this will give you an annual pass to the Museum which you can use for further visits in 2022.Once having visited, you will definitely want to return.
** Alternatively, meet us at the Museum at 2pm. There is on road parking in the streets behind the museum. The 135 or 41 bus from the PrintWorks takes you to a stop near the Museum.
