White paint is the workhorse of every palette. It cools down other colours, desaturates them, helps to make them more opaque if needed…
Yet the usage of white paint in art has been troublesome since time immemorial – from technical and compositional issues to causing serious health problems with many artists. Michelangelo, Goya and Van Gogh are some of the best-known painters suspected of such suffering, but the trio is just the tip of an iceberg (a white one!). Add to this changing fashions and social norms, and white becomes one of the most difficult residents of every palette and many paintings.
Using illustrations from the Renaissance to the 20th century – from Holbein the Younger, Vermeer and Reynolds to Monet, Singer Sargent and Mondrian – the talk will introduce the most common white paints in famous artworks and the problems associated with them.
