We are organising a 5-day trip to Dundee (stopping for one night in Carlisle) in September / October 2019 travelling by Private Coach from Manchester and we will be accompanied by experienced Guide, Jane Brand.
Our itinerary has been planned to include and take advantage of our time when travelling to / from and whilst in Dundee & Carlisle and we aim to include the following interesting and especially varied visits:
• Guildhall Museum, Carlisle – Built in 1407 & housed in the upstairs of Carlisle’s only medieval house. On view in each Guild Room are objects relating to the history of the Guilds – Butchers, Merchants, Shoemakers, Skinners, Smiths, Tailors, Tanners & Weavers.
• Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery – houses an extensive & important art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles & large & important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material.
• Carlisle Cathedral – second smallest of England's ancient cathedrals notable features include figurative stone carvings, a set of medieval choir stalls and the largest window in the Flowing Decorated Gothic style.
• Garden of Cosmic Speculation – created by landscape architect & theorist Charles Jencks with forty major areas, gardens, bridges, landforms, sculptures, terraces, fences & architectural works covering 30-acres.
• Dundee V & A – the first design museum in Scotland designed by renowned architect Kengo Kumafirst. It hosts major exhibitions, celebrates Scotland's design heritage, inspires and promotes contemporary talent.
• The Royal Research Ship (RRS), Discovery – constructed in the city in 1900, RRS Discovery was the ship, which carried Captain Scott on his first expedition across the Antarctic.
• The McManus- Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum – a Gothic Revival-style building which houses a museum and art gallery with a collection of fine and decorative art as well as a natural history collection.
• Aberdeen Art Gallery - noted for its fine collection of modern Scottish and international art and a permanent collection spanning from the 15th century to the present day, including 18th century portraits, Impressionist & Post-Impressionist masterpieces & powerful 20th century & contemporary works.
• Glamis Castle - The family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, Glamis Castle is the legendary setting for Shakespeare's Macbeth, the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother and the birthplace of Princess Margaret.
• Falkirk Palace - A fine Renaissance palace with an extensive formal garden and one of Britain’s oldest tennis courts. The country residence of the royal Stuarts, adored by Mary, Queen of Scots. (Not Drumlanrig Castle as previously listed in the mailing)
