Collections and illustrations in Manchester Museum with curator Rachel Webster
The Manchester Museum herbarium contains prints and drawings which have been largely collected together for the purpose of teaching botanical science. Many prints form part cultivated plants collection, created by Leopold Hartley Grindon to support his teaching and writing. This collection includes a wide range of examples, from woodblock prints in early herbals, such as Fuchs’ De historia stirpium and John Parkinson’s Theatrum Botanicum, to 19th century plates from Curtis’ Botanical Magazine. As part of Owen’s College, the museum also acquired teaching aids such as Brendel botanical models and Peter’s Botanishe Wandtafeln.
The Whitworth’s Raqib Shaw exhibition included a sample of MMs botanical illustration archive.
