Christmas Lunch and Local Lottery Grant Aspirations!
Pre-lunch visits have been arranged at The Pankhurst Centre and the Holy Name Church.
The Pankhurst Centre (60-62 Nelson St, M13 9WP) will be open for an exclusive visit from 10.30 to 11.30am. The house where the Suffragette movement was formed still stands and the small museum pays tribute to the Pankhurst family and the Suffragettes. The Centre is hoping to benefit from Heritage Lottery Funding to expand and open more rooms.
The Holy Name Church, Oxford Rd. will be open from 11.00 to 12.00am where Fr Brendan Callaghan will be there to welcome us and talk about the restoration plans with the grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The church, which is the largest in Manchester, was designed by Joseph Hansom (who designed the Hansom cab) and built between 1868 &1871. The tower, erected in 1928, was designed Adrian Gilbert Scott.
We will have lunch across the road in the Christie Bistro based in the old Science Library of Owens College; converted into a Bistro, steeped in the institution’s history and character, with portraits of previous Vice-Chancellors gracing the walls and endless rows of original books and documents.
