Manchester Contemporary
Saturday 13 October 2018
The Manchester Contemporary, already the biggest Art Fair of its kind outside London, celebrates its eleventh edition this October, bringing together emerging galleries and artists from across Britain.
Kate Jesson, (Curator, Manchester Art Gallery) will introduce us to some of the gallerists and artists exhibiting this year.
In the afternoon Tricia Tierney will lead the group to visit the Saul Hay Gallery, Railway Cottage, off Castle St, M3 4LZ (short walk – less than ½ mile) to see the exhibition ‘Room 103’ A Tribute to George Orwell, showing work selected by open submissions from artists. Although he was not a visual artist and art criticism does not figure prominently in his work, George Orwell is one of the most visually descriptive of writers this or any country has produced. We will hear a little about what led Ian and Catherine to set up the gallery and what they see as the main challenges of running an independent Gallery.
