It's always good to get a pat on the back so we wanted to share our news.
The Friends of the Whitworth Art Gallery have been chosen by the British Association. of Friends of Museums as one of the finalists in their 2021 Impact Award Competition.
We couldn't be more pleased to have recognition for our work during the last year to turn the Friends into a vibrant Virtual Organisation - without ever losing sight of our members who can't access us online.
How did we do it?
- Organised a series of monthly lectures, with attendances of up to 100, on themes as diverse as The Decorative Glass Industry in Victorian Manchester and the History of the Hermitage - the latter coming live from St Petersburg with our guest speaker a senior Hermitage curator .
- Transfered our monthly Look Club discussion online, helping members develop skills with Powerpoint and other presentational techniques.
- Took members on two virtual overseas tours, to fill the gap left by our cancelled programme of Art Tours.
- Ventured into the world of e-commerce, selling (and selling out of!) Christmas Cards, designed by members, and, more recently, selling greetings cards online.
- Held a virtual Coffee Morning with Whitworth Director, Alistair Hudson, who presented his vision for the Whitworth’s future as an organisation where art is used to bring about social change.
- Maintained a link with our Cafe, publishing recipes provided by the Cafe manager online, and inviting Friends to demonstrate their expertise via our website.
- Ran online quizzes and competitions, some with prizes.
As a result of our efforts, we continued to raise money for the Gallery and were there when we were most needed. Two of the exhibitions this year, Imran Perretta's video, "the destructors", and "Still Parents", which opens on September 24th, are sponsored by you as a Friend of the Whitworth. We hope, too, that we have kept you informed, entertained, amused - and ready to join us back in the Gallery in the Autumn.
Join us at the awards presentation on Zoom on November 13th at 2pm to 3.30. More details here: https://www.bafm.co.uk/2021/09/06/bafm-national-award-event-and-agm-2021/
