...but how about an art adventure?

A beach holiday? We can’t help you!
...but how about an art adventure?
Off to see Bruegel at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna
The Friends of the Whitworth do many things, but organising beach holidays isn't one of them.
What we are good at, however, are our overseas (art) adventures.
Some of our travellers have described them as their best holidays ever. We can see why.
- Bruegel, and Christmas markets, in Vienna
- Rembrandt, Velázquez, and the canals by night, in Amsterdam
- Modernist art and villas, and delicious food, on the Cote d’Azur
…are just some of the things that Friends have experienced recently on our popular tours.
A welcome lunch for Friends of the Whitworth, La Mediterranée, Mougins
Our week-long tours are planned and accompanied by a knowledgeable art historian to include
- More established venues like the Musée Matisse in Nice
- Out-of-the-way places like Eileen Gray’s modernist Villa E-1027 (see the cover photo) or the Mougins Museum of Classical Art
- Plenty of free time and optional extras so you can strike out on your own.
Time to wander round Saint Tropez
Snow on the roof tops, Vienna
Sea of Desire, Ed Ruscha, Fondation Carmignac, Île de Porquerolles, Hyères, France
And there's more...
Our new pre-Christmas short tours to European cities, also with an expert guide, take advantage of some ‘blockbuster’ exhibitions and seasonal festivities. Who can forget the Vienna Christmas market in the snow, the bonfires and carol singers at the amazing Gugging Museum of Outsider Art or the evening canal-boat trip on the Amsterdam canals?
Where next?
The pandemic kept us at home. We’ll be out and about again soon, though, with maybe a short December 2021 tour before re-introducing our early summer tour in 2022.
Interested? Keep checking the FOW website for the latest news.
Don’t take our word for it. This is what our travellers tell us…
“I started with Florence – in 1999! I just wanted to travel and it was my neighbour who suggested we join a Friends of the Whitworth tour to Florence. I discovered this friendly group of people who love art and like to visit interesting places. A prior knowledge of art is not a requirement and this mixture of friendship, conversation, love of art and travel became my interest and my annual holiday.”

“Our art historian, Nirvana Romell, has accompanied us on different visits from South Africa to many places in Europe. On a recent trip to the Balkans, Nirvana, who is Croatian, gave us her unique insight into life and politics as well as art in Croatia, Kosovo or Montenegro. Being a Friend of the Whitworth is a wonderful opportunity to experience more art as well as make friends. “

Learning how Rembrandt did it! In the Rembrandt House, Amsterdam
“For me the highlight was a print workshop in Rembrandt’s House in Amsterdam and seeing the work come to life, just as Rembrandt himself would have done…but then again, there was also the wonderful meals as our guide not only helped us experience the art, but also the local food…”

Our overseas tours are open to members only. The good news? You can join for as little as £27 (single), £45 (double), enjoy all the benefits, and support one of Manchester's important cultural institutions. Join here: https://www.friendsofthewhitworth.org.uk/Article/Membership
