Looking and Doing with the Friends
What do the following have in common?
Denise and Christopher in the screen printing workshop. Our title photo is of Denise Carter's finished piece of work.
- Chinese brush painting
- Felt making
- The art of water-colour
- Screen printing
- Patchwork
- Quilting
They’ve all been among the topics taught in our special Gallery based workshops!
Tutor, Isabel Dibden Wright, and curator, Uthra Rajgopal, helping students explore the Whitworth textile collection
And what makes our workshops …work?
Patchwork samples for study

Students at work!
- Friendly, informal, relaxed
- But also taught by practicing artists who really know their stuff
- Supported by a study visit to an exhibition in the gallery to provide that extra bit of inspiration….
- …or, sometimes, linked to a curator-supported tour of works from our collection not often on display.
Careful concentration in a watercolour workshop.
Learn new skills! Brush up on technique!. Find a new hobby! Get inspired!
More of the many reasons to join the Friends of the Whitworth.
Our next workshop is on 15th June, when artist Christine Tomkinson will be leading a block printing workshop. Using the wallpaper exhibition, Open House, which is now installed in the Gallery, as your starting point, you will have the opportunity to create your own printing blocks and experiment with creating your own designs and repeating patterns. You could be making blocks from lino, wood or found objects, trialing your own designs or collaborating to produce a group wallpaper. No drawing skill or printing experience necessary!
