A Happy New Year!
Looking forward to 2021
The new year feels a little like the old one, but we are hopeful!
Although the Whitworth Gallery remains closed for now, you can be certain that the Gallery staff are busy behind the scenes, and so are the Friends of the Whitworth. We may have hibernated a little over the holidays - there was just so much Christmas Cake and so many mince pies to get through! We know, though that the Gallery needs us now, more than ever- and we need art, even if it has to be enjoyed online.
So, we’re planning a new programme for 2021 with two events already lined up for January.
Imran Perretta; the destructors
On January 19th, 5pm to 6pm, Whitworth curator, Poppy Bowers, will offer a preview of a new exhibition, already installed in the Gallery, and ready for our return. We are especially proud - and, if you are a Friend you should be too - because this exhibition is made possible because of the sponsorship of the Friends of the Whitworth.
Imran Perretta’s film, the destructors, the focus of the exhibition, was produced by Chisenhale Gallery and Spike Island, Bristol, and commissioned by Chisenhale Gallery, Spike Island, the Whitworth, and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead with support from Outset Contemporary Art Fund. It draws on Imran’s own experience as a young man of Bangladeshi heritage and is informed by conversations with young Muslim men in Tower Hamlets about issues affecting them. Through the work, Perretta meditates on the complexities of adolescence and ‘coming of age’ for young British Muslim men living in the UK.
Imran Perretta is one of ten artists selected to receive a Turner Prize bursary, in place of the 2020 Turner Prize, and our Zoom lecture is, therefore, a chance to learn more about one of a new generation of artists. Poppy will also be setting the work in the context of contemporary video art. Members of the FoW can book online. If you are not (yet) a Friend, email us at [email protected] to reserve you place.
Otti Berger, textile artist-our January Look Club
Textile; Otti Berger
Our second event is a Zoom Look Club, our regular monthly and informal gathering where we take the opportunity to slow down and really look - and talk- about a piece of art or an artist. In this month’s session, on the 28th January, 6pm to 7pm, we will be talking about the work of textile artist, Otti Berger, a member of the Bauhaus, some of whose innovative work is in the Whitworth Collection. Berger worked with Anni Albers and other weavers in the Bauhaus Weaving Workshop, experimenting with new materials and styles of work, as well as setting up her own workshop in Berlin. Berger died in Auschwitz in 1944 so as well as starting off the Look Club for 2021, this event also marks Holocaust Memorial Day on the 27th January. For more information about how to join in email us at [email protected]
