The Gathering of Strangers and the Art Garden in Bloom: Anne Mackinnon

2020 has not been the year we planned. When the Whitworth Gallery closed for the first Lockdown in March, everything was in place for the yearly general meeting. We had to cancel, of course, along with a Thursday night takeover of the Gallery by our brilliant - and very hard working- Student Friends. Art History-The B Slides would have taken us on a journey into the less explored corners of art history, and asked questions about some of the judgements we make. Like dominos falling, it seemed in the days that followed, all our plans for the year would collapse as we put our programme of Gallery events trips and tours, and a new Members evening, on hold.
It hasn’t worked out that way! Thanks to the power of social media and Zoom technology - and our determination - our amazing programme of online talks and lectures and our Look Club have continued. We have become the VFoW- the Virtual Friends of the Whitworth! What’s more, we’ve attracted record audiences and participation. Above all, we have continued to fulfil our aim of supporting the Whitworth Gallery using subscriptions, donations and the proceeds of our merchandise, especially this year, our brilliant Christmas Cards, to fill in some of the gaps in the Gallery finances. Virtual we may be, but in the real world (IRL) as our grandchildren say, our impact is as real as ever.in
So when you visit the Whitworth in 2021, some of the exhibitions you enjoy will be there because of substantial support from the Friends of the Whitworth. We have also contributed to the Gallery’s programmes of activities and acquisition. Membership of the Friends doesn’t cost a lot. For from £27 a year for a single membership, and from £45 for a double membership, members get access to our events as well as discounts in both the shop and the Cafe. Not least, they have the satisfaction of knowing, that, as an organisation run entirely by members, all proceeds go to the Whitworth.
If you are not yet a member, please join us. You can do so either online or in the Gallery. Just ask a member of the Visitor Team for details. If you are already a member, thank you!
PS Gift memberships also available! Just send us an email and we'll sort out the rest.
