Meet Fabia
For the last three years the Friends of the Whitworth has been working with the Art History Department at the University of Manchester to provide a student with the opportunity to find out more about the Whitworth and our organisation. This year our intern is Fabia Martin, a second year student from London. Before the Gallery closure, Fabia was working on two very exciting events and, once the Gallery reopens we hope we can help her make them happen. For now, however, Fabia tells us about what the Gallery means to her-a reminder that art, and the Whitworth Gallery, is for everyone, irrespective of age or any other circumstances.
“As the student intern at the Whitworth for the academic year 2019-2020, I’m really excited to be involved with developing the Student Friends network and encouraging student engagement with the gallery. I’m currently in my second year of studying Art History at the University of Manchester, which has nurtured my lifelong love of art and opened my eyes to Manchester’s thriving artistic scene. While my academic studies have deepened my understanding of the cultural significance of art, my enthusiasm for it was born out of going out and visiting the abundance of galleries and museums I grew up around in London, so I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be involved with such a wonderful gallery as the Whitworth.
During my time here, the Whitworth has been a favourite spot of mine; as a place to relax, get a coffee and visit the exhibitions, as well as to visit the archives for research towards my degree. I’m eager to continue the work of the Student Friends in opening up a dialogue between the gallery and the students, so that it can be enjoyed by as many as possible.
To promote this I will act as a student liaison, trying to boost student interest by talking to my peers about what they would be interested in seeing more of at the Whitworth, in the hopes of putting on exciting and creative events that make the most of the wonderful gallery spaces and appeal to all types of students. I would love to organise events that utilise the gallery’s late closure on a Thursday that are targeted at students, as well as daytime events that inspire creativity and active involvement with the art.
I hope to be able to realise some of my ideas, and I look forward to making the most of my time in this role!”
