Welcome Evenings for New Friends of the Whitworth
January & July, 2016
With so many new members, the Friends of the Whitworth decided to invite everyone to a ‘Behind the Scenes’ evening in dark & rainy January. A surprising number of folk turned out (thank you) but because of demand, we had another one on a much better weather night in July.
At both events, the curators pulled out all the stops, whizzing us about in groups to see rare prints in the mysterious Study Centre (not open very often because of the pressure of office space whilst repairs are being done on the north east corner of the gallery-you will have seen the scaffolding!).
We also visited the popular Tibor Reich exhibition & heard what went on in the Textiles Gallery-so much scholarship; even Friends who have known the gallery for years were astonished at such depth of study.
Being allowed into the vaults is always exciting. Modern & Contemporary Art Curator Mary Griffiths gave us an entertaining tour of some key pieces in the collection. We heard about her buying trips on behalf of the gallery & the thrill of even meeting the artists on occasions; a perk of the job!
With a glass of wine & a chat with existing members, we hope that our new Friends found these evenings convivial & informative. We look forward to seeing you on trips, events at the gallery & even perhaps on future Whitworth holidays.
