Art of the French Riviera

While Impressionists’ exhibitions in Paris represented the first wave of Modernism, the next generation of avant-garde artists left the capital in search of new directions. A lot of them found renewed inspiration in Provence and Cote d’Azur. It is difficult to talk about Modernism without mentioning the south of France – it seems that most of the movement’s early history was forged in the Mediterranean sunshine.
Van Gogh said that the whole future of art was to be found in the south of France - and he was right. Motivated by Cézanne and Van Gogh, attracted by the low cost of living and enabled by the newly developed railroads, a veritable army of artists arrived at the French Riviera in the early 20th century. Their different styles of painting and artistic personalities would determine the course of Modernism for decades. In this lecture, we investigate the art inspired by the Riviera and artists such as Renoir and Bonnard, as well as ‘young guns’ led by Henri Matisse.
