Modernism: From Paris to the Riviera, Part 1
A new series of lectures for 2018 by Nirvana Romell
While Impressionists’ exhibitions in Paris represented the first wave of Modernism, the next generation of avant-garde artists left the capital in search of new directions. A lot of them found renewed inspiration in Provence and Cote d’Azur. It is difficult to talk about Modernism without mentioning the south of France – it seems that most of the movement’s early history was forged in the Mediterranean sunshine.
The first lecture will focus on Post-Impressionism and the ways in which it determined the course of art history in the 20th century. Cézanne, “the greatest of us all”, left Paris to return to his native Aix-en-Provence and, with his landscapes, changed the nature of painting and inspired numerous followers to visit the region. In Arles, Van Gogh and Gauguin battled over the subjectivity, symbolism and universality of art, never quite settling the score. In their footsteps, a whole new generation of artists soon followed.
