A Journey through Kosovo & Montenegro
A Journey through Kosovo & Montenegro
Tuesday 22 May 2018
Following our very successful visits led by Nirvana Romell to Istria & Friuli (2015), South Africa (2013), Sweden (2011) and Dalmatia (2009), we are organising a nine day tour with Nirvana to Montenegro and Kosovo.
The joint area of Kosovo and Montenegro is roughly equal in size to 1/3 of Scotland, but dominated by 8000-9000 ft high mountains, wild rivers and deep canyons. Like most of the Balkans - it contains an incredible variety of wonderful monuments from different cultures and eras. We will explore typical Mediterranean medieval urban organisation on the Adriatic coast, Venetian baroque towns, Ottoman colonial outposts, and founding monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Comparing the arts and architecture, we will untangle the complex web of history and see how the East-West and North-South cultural connections formed the identities of the local peoples and defined their past, present and future.
The highlights will include:-
- Serbian Orthodox Gracanica Monastery
- Prishtina capital city of Kosovo
- Town of Pec/Peje and the village of Decani
- City of Prizren and the Gazi Mehmet Pasha Mosque
- Crossing the Kosovo Albanian border to Shkoder and the ruined Rozafa Castle
- Cetinje the old royal capital of the medieval Principality of Zeta
- Boat ride to Perast in the Bay of Kotor
Nirvana is Croatian by birth and has a postgraduate degree in the Art History of Western Art and Art History of former Yugoslavia. She has lectured regularly in History of Art for Manchester Art Gallery, Museums of Liverpool (The Walker), the Art Society and, now, for the FoW on ‘Roots of Modernism’. She has led many tours to the Balkans and beyond.
As usual we will enjoy 'welcome' and 'farewell' dinners together at local restaurants. This time however, the majority of lunches and dinners are also included.
Nirvana is planning a day-school in the New Year to help us understand the key periods and players before we go.
