Roots of Modernism Part 2
Roots of Modernism Part 2
Tuesday 13 June 2017
The wide scale of changes that shook the Western society in the 19th century had far-reaching effects on arts and culture. Traditional forms of art, materials and methods of production appeared outdated, incapable of expressing the new industrialized world. Modernism arose as a philosophical as well as a formal rejection of classical aesthetics and academic values. In art history, the term ‘modernism’ usually refers to the period from the mid-18th century to the 1970s. However, like the term itself, these dates continue to be hotly debated.
The second lecture focuses on Realism as a movement in art and the various concepts of ‘reality’ in art. Realism emerged in the mid-19th century, rejecting Romanticism and heralding a conscious break with the classical past. Portraying only contemporary themes, it was the first movement to consciously examine social, economic, political and cultural aspects of modern life.
