This year sees the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, and to mark the occasion The John Rylands Library is displaying two books from the collections which are so special that they rarely emerge from storage. The First Folio was compiled after Shakespeare’s death by his friends John Heminge and Henry Condell, immortalising Shakespeare’s dramatic output in a single luxury volume. His Sonnets were, by contrast, published in a small, unassuming book priced at one shilling. However, they too have a timeless endurance, still prompting speculation about the identities of the beautiful youth, ‘dark lady’ and rival poet who feature in the sequence of poems.
Join Julianne Simpson (curator of Rare Books) to see these two icons of English Literature along with other treasures from the collection, celebrating the greatest English playwright and his enduring legacy.
