St George & the Dragon and many other stories in Saddleworth and Gallery Oldham in the afternoon
Local artist Diana Terry will guide us round churches in Saddleworth to look at stained glass windows. In Greenfield: St Mary's and the Methodist Church, Christ Church in Friezland and St Thomas's in Werneth. The group of churches will show the development of stained glass from 1850 to 1923 and the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement and that of Walter Crane, who became Director of Design at the Manchester School of Art in 1893, together with the artists who had trained there and who then worked with Manchester manufacturers.
There will be time for lunch in Oldham (not included in the cost).
We will spend the afternoon in Gallery Oldham having a behind the scenes tour of the Art Collection with Curator Rebecca Hill. There will be time to see the exhibition ‘Sculpting Stories’ which explores how sculptors use people in their art work to tell stories about themselves, others and the societies we live in. The show includes significant names from the 20th & 21st centuries such as Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Jacob Epstein and Laura Ford.
