Rebel Visions: The War Art of CRW Nevinson, Barber Institute of Fine Art, Birmingham. Famous for his dramatic, often haunting images of the battlefield and its soldiers, Nevinson’s art also acknowledges the sometimes unpalatable effects war had on British society. Always a rebel, he produced work that ranged in variety from official war propaganda to anti-war condemnation – some of which was censored.
We will visit Library of Birmingham where there will be time to buy lunch and explore the building. The new Library was designed by internationally acclaimed Dutch architects Mecanoo. The library has a number of nationally and internationally significant collections, including the specialist Shakespeare Memorial Room now housed on the top floor and is Britains most important Shakespeare collection.
In the afternoon we will visit the New Art Gallery, Walsall for Dealing with Dreams The Garman Ryan Collection 40th Anniversary exhibition. The collection is a memorial to the Epsteins’ extraordinary circle of family & friends including Augustus John, Modigliani, Matthew Smith & Gaudier-Brzeska. Above all, it provides important insights into Jacob Epstein’s long and often controversial career.
