Lady Anne’s Way
An Early Feminist?
The recent Friends trip to Kendal Art Gallery and Dalemain House aroused my interest in Lady Anne Clifford (1590 – 1676). After a long legal battle she inherited castles and estates stretching from Skipton to Penrith. Much of her year was spent travelling by coach between her properties where she organised rebuilding after the damage caused by the Civil War.
Lady Anne’s Way is a relatively new long distance footpath (100 miles) and attempts to follow the regular route taken by Anne. Much of the route follows the valleys containing.three major rivers – Wharfe, Ure and Eden. Parts of this low level walk can be done by anyone who is reasonably fit. On the more remote parts of the route it is easy to stop and visualise the coach and retinue of up to 200 people coming into view! I am doing the walk in stages and so far have completed 64 miles.
'The Great Picture' in Abbot Hall Gallery shows Lady Anne in three different stages of her life.

No not a feminist, according to Harry, but a woman with attitude, guts and determination.
